Topic : ASEAN Economic Outlook 2023: Will China's recovery and RCEP help buffer ASEAN from the global slowdown?
Synopsis:
2023 has turned out to be a more difficult and unpredictable year for many. On one hand, the threat of a global recession has increased after a surprise global banking crisis triggered widespread volatility in the fixed income space. On the other hand, the threat of inflation remains very real as the US Federal Reserve and global central banks continue to hike interest rates. Adding to this volatile mix is the latest surprise production cut by OPEC that will risk re-fueling inflation risks in the months ahead.
Amidst both threats of global slowdown and persistent inflation, what can we expect for ASEAN's economic performance going forward? Will China be able to successfully reboot its economy post Covid? Will China play an increasingly growth oriented role for ASEAN? Will RCEP be able to help shield ASEAN from the global trade slowdown? What can we expect next for the US Dollar, Renminbi and various ASEAN currencies? How should businesses position themselves in the currency and interest rate space? We discuss these pertinent and important issues.
