[SingCham HK Speaker Series] Luncheon Talk on "Navigating The Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong's Role" by Dr Jonathan Choi of HK Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (HKCGCC)
The Singapore Chamber of Commerce (Hong Kong) (SingCham HK) is organising a luncheon talk on "Navigating The Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong's Role" as part of our SingCham HK Sixth Speaker Series this year. The event is on 8 December 2022 (Thursday) from 12 noon to 2 pm at Island Shangri-la Hotel Admiralty. We have invited Dr Jonathan Choi, Permanent Honorary President of Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce. Dr Choi will share his views on Hong Kong's role as that of a "CIO", meaning Hong Kong is both a connector and investor.
Hong Kong has been working closely with other GBA cities for over 40 years since the mainland's reform and opening-up, and more than 50 years with ASEAN members states. Owing to its long-standing involvement in both regions, Hong Kong is a highly desirable location for companies to jump from the GBA to Southeast Asian countries or the other way round.
One of Hong Kong's competitive edges is a robust modern service industry that accounts for up to 90% of the city's GDP. As a core pillar industry in the GBA, the modern service sector relies heavily on international involvement to maximize its influence and benefits. This is where Hong Kong comes into play.
Dr. Jonathan Choi will share his views on Hong Kong's role as that of a "CIO", meaning Hong Kong is both a connector and investor. Meanwhile Hong Kong is also an operator, managing and operating business activities among the region.
But Hong Kong isn't only at the giving end. The city has benefited in return from its "CIO" role. 60% of Hong Kong's capital market comes from the mainland as traditional companies in Shenzhen or other GBA cities come to Hong Kong for listing public. Onshore and offshore trading between the mainland and other RCEP participants is complete through Hong Kong, during which Hong Kong container terminal and transportation services also benefit considerably.
